چکیده

Introduction: Impact-generated hydrothermal systems may have caused widespread alteration of the crust on early Mars. We previously explored the range of alteration products using several Martian meteorites as crustal proxies: LEW88516 [1-3], Dhofar 378, Chassigny [4], and Nakhla [5]. Overall, the dominating alteration phases are oxides, hydroxides, clay minerals, and other hydrous silicates. Our results match well with the hydrous silicates (nontronite, chlorite) observed by OMEGA and CRISM [e.g., 6,7]. The two most recent findings by CRISM are carbonates [8] and serpentine [9]. While the latter is formed in our calculations from all olivine-rich starting compositions (LEW88516, Chassigny), carbonates require CO 2 (or HCO 3

Modeling Alteration Minerals on Mars – Investigating the High Temperature Component

Introduction: Alteration minerals are important indicators of thermochemical environments at the time of their formation – and thus indicators for the potential habitability of a site [1,2]. Therefore, the detection of alteration minerals, especially nontronite [3], on Mars was an important step to understand Mars’ hydrous history. This initial finding was followed by the detection of a wide va...

Numerical Modeling of Impact-induced Hydrothermal Activity at the Chicxulub

Introduction: A hypervelocity impact of a large bolide results in a significant but localized temperature increase in the planetary crust, initiating hydrothermal activity if water or ice are present. Evidence of this activity has been observed at several terrestrial craters in the form of alteration mineral assemblages, fraction-ated isotopic compositions, and fluid inclusion chemistry [e.g., ...

Hydrothermal activity recorded in post Noachian-aged impact craters on Mars

Hydrothermal systems have previously been reported in ancient Noachian and Hesperian-aged craters on Mars using CRISM but not in Amazonian-aged impact craters. However, the nakhlite meteorites do provide evidence of Amazonian hydrothermal activity. This study uses CRISM data of 144 impact craters of ≥7 km diameter and 14 smaller craters (3–7 km diameter) within terrain mapped as Amazonian to se...

Quantifying Low Temperature Production of Methane on Mars

Introduction: Methane was first detected in the Matian atmosphere in 2003 [1-3], and its implications have been widely debated [e.g., 4-8]. Methane can be generated in terrestrial biological systems, and so is a potential indicator for past or present life (see e.g., [4,5]). However, methane can be produced anorganically (without intervention of life) in several sorts of terrestrial environment...

Impact-generated Hydrothermal Alteration on Mars: Clay Minerals, Oxides, Zeolites, and More

Introduction: In the Noachian, Mars’ crust was deeply affected by impact crater gardening [1], and subsequent hydrothermal alteration. While water was present in the Martian crust [2,3], frequent impacts [4,5] provided prominent heat sources that drove hydrothermal systems. Those systems were scattered randomly over the planet’s surface and variable in size, but generally spanned the diameter o...
